Rides in Crete (Greece)

Crete, with its roots dating back to ancient times, is often considered to be the cradle of western civilisation. It is the largest island of Greece and is located in the south of the Aegan Sea. Not only does it feature this rich history and culture but the geography of the country is wonderfully varied and offers unlimited space for a great horseback adventure. Crete offers an exquisite 1,000 kilometre coastline, dotted with numerous coves, bays and peninsulas, which afford a multitude of soft, sandy beaches along the Mediterranean Sea. The island of Crete has olive groves, stunning lakes and unspoilt waterfalls, all set within beautifully mountainous landscapes. You can ride along beautiful trails in the tranquility of nature. There are beautiful towns and charming villages and harbours and excellent food.

The history of Crete is long and rich and, according to archaeologists, it started in the Neolithic times. Crete had always played an important part in the history of Greece and it is worth mentioning that the island had made its appearance vivid in many aspects of the Mediterranean and the Greek culture, even in the Greek mythology. Crete has an historic importance in today's world as the home of the Minoan civilization with important archeological finds at Knossos, Phaistos and Gortys.Crete has many fine architectural jewels. Venetians and Turkish invaders have influenced the architecture of the island and many buildings of this period are still standing today.

The mountain-type Messara pony is native to Crete and has existed on the island since year 1000 or longer. The name comes from the Mesara Plain where they are mostly found. The modern Cretan horse was developed by crossing the native mares on Arabian stallions imported during the Turkish occupation in the 17th century. It is now a rare breed with around one hundred left in existence. Since 1994 there exists a studbook and a conservation programme has been started. The Messara usually stand between 12.2 and 14 hands high. They still retain some characteristics of their Arabian ancestors. Most Messara ponies have a natural pacing gait that is easy and comfortable to ride. They are very good at walking on rocky ground and uneven surfaces. Messara ponies are used for light farm work and for transportation but more and more also for riding and racing. The stallions are often crossed with female donkeys (Jennies) to produce hinnies.

Crete has a typical Mediterranean climate, enjoying hot, dry summers and rainy but mild winters. Crete is a very popular holiday destination, and the islands tourism infrastructure caters for all tastes. Crete is most definitely an island that can be explored on horseback.
