Sicily is the largest and most important island in the Mediterranean occupying a central and strategic location halfway between Gibraltar and the Suez Canal creating a bottleneck between Italy and Cap Bon in Tunisia. Sicily's coasts are gold with orange and lemon orchards. In north eastern Sicily you'll find lush forests. In the central regions you'll encounter rugged land and rolling hills. Dignified vineyards, ancient olive groves, hardy almond orchards and endless wheat fields complete the picture. Summer is amber land under a sky of blue. Winter finds palm trees dusted with snow in a surreal symphony. Spring is a rainbow of wild flowers set against greenest fields. Barely a third the size of Ireland, Sicily manages to retain the illusion of a small continent in a large sea. Sicily is home to majestic mountains and Europe's greatest natural wonder, Mount Etna at 3342 metres, Mount Etna is the highest peak, and Europe's largest active volcano. Sicily is also home to the Sanfratellani, the closest thing Sicily has to "wild horses". Black or bay there are only a few hundred left of this graceful breed and they are identified with the northern slopes of the Nebrodi mountains in what is now the province of Messina. These wild horses are now a protected species In winter and spring this is one of Sicily's greener regions a rugged landscape of seasonal streams, high woodlands and grasslands - the perfect place for grazing and also for horse riding.

The diversity and beauty of Sicily is such that German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote: "To have seen Italy without having seen Sicily is to not have seen Italy at all, for Sicily is the clue to everything."
