Description

The Natural Park of Cabo de Gata is situated in the province of Almería, south-eastern Spain. The unique landscape is arid and volcanic. It comprises sea-cliffs, volcanic sierras and a coastal plain populated by extensive dunes, stony plateaux, small lagoons and salt-pans. The coastal wetlands harbour many species of birds. In 1987 this 50,000 hectares of land, sea, volcanoes, dunes, cliffs and a wide range of aquatic life, flora and fauna was declared by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve. The Cabo de Gata landscape is seen nowhere else in Europe and enjoys many environmental and geological resources which are now being enjoyed by an increasing number of tourists. The area is populated by less than 5,000 inhabitants but welcomes more than 500,000 tourists every year.

The Cabo de Gata coastline has some of the most tranquil and pristine waters in Spain. It is composed of sand dunes and salt pans and edged by a chain of Desert Mountains that fall sharply into the sea, creating wonderful hidden bays and sandy coves that are perfect places for exploring, swimming, sunbathing or just relaxing.

The inland parts of this natural park are arid and desert-like, while the mountain range of Cabo de Gata has a distinctly volcanic appearance with sharp peaks and crags. This is an ideal area for horse riding as well as hiking, climbing, mountain biking and off-road land vehicle excursions.

In this wonderful countryside, we can offer you some first-class horse riding. Your guide Antonio is a skilled horseman whilst remaining a kind, caring and attentive host. His love of his horses and nature is evident in his holidays and he describes horses as "our companions through life". Antonio is ably assisted by 2 other guides, Desi and Michel, as well as Julian who handles all the logictis and ensures everyone is taken care of during the trails. They will make sure you enjoy a wonderful holiday where you can immerse yourself in Spanish culture, ride a beautiful Andalusian horse and most importantly, enjoy yourself.

The stables here are typical of the area. Here, horse riding lessons are given and it is the base for excursions. From here guests can ride on horseback to the unspoilt coves of San Jose, full of mystery, and still accessible during mild days in autumn.

The horses and lunar landscape of Cabo de Gata paint a picture that brings to mind Western films. This is no coincidence - Sergio Leone filmed the Clint Eastwood movie "For a Fistful of Dollars" here and in its seventy hectares of land. This area also featured in the film "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade".

Testimonials

Ingrid C., Feb. 21, 2024

Favourite memory? All the trails surrounded by beautiful landscapes. Very happy with the horses and the equipment. Antonio and Anne know how to make you feel like an acquaintance of theirs.

Mandy C., Dec. 12, 2023

An all round fabulous ride. Favourite memory? Riding a well mannered, forward going horse along beautiful coastline, beaches and mountains with the sun on my back in November/December. Excellent accommodation. Food was delicious, good quality and plentiful. Our guide, Antonio, was fabulous - professional and friendly and very determined to make sure all horses and guests were well cared for and happy.

Russell and Antonia, Jan. 24, 2022

Stunning scenery on varied rides with an excellent guide. Really well cared for horses too. The horses were excellent, really responsive and well mannered. You can tell how well looked after they are. Our guide Karin was fantastic, she spoke excellent English and had a good knowledge of the area. She also gave some good advice to improve our riding and was very personable and easy to talk to.

Melinda C., Nov. 8, 2017

Had a really nice trip, wonderful people to ride with, food was incredible! Love the beaches! Beautiful place! it was great, I miss the food, such a great experience, loved the food!!!! American food sucks, it really does.., so amazing the great cuisine in Spain!

Lesley A., Nov. 6, 2015

The holiday was relaxing and enjoyable... Manolo looked after me very well and it was clearly important to him that I had a good holiday. He pointed out some things on the routes, which was much appreciated. One day I went our with Juan Antonio, who has just started working there. He chatted a lot and taught me a lot about how their horses are trained and how I could improve my riding. He also pointed out a lot of features on the route and told me about local people and customs. I really enjoyed riding with him. The horses were incredibly well trained and relaxed. They were clearly well looked after. The saddle was comfortable and the tack looked in good condition.

James R-M., Sept. 21, 2015

To be able to personally develop within a week from a trot, to hold my own while galloping alongside seasoned local Spanish riders was a feat only made achievable thanks to the joyful and resolute nature of trainer and owner Manolo and his delightful family... (on the trail) everyday grew ever more phenomenal as we trekked from mountain summit to galloping mile after mile of secluded palm tree framed beaches.

Johanne T., Aug. 13, 2015

Very nice - although the temperature was a bit high for both humans and horses we managed and got a great week of learning how to ride. Favourite memory was to get to know some really beautiful horses. And of course the nice environment, beautiful landscape, nice people and really nice hotel. Very happy and satisfied with the horses and very friendly, good teacher. Transfer was easy and I can think of nothing to improve the holiday. We really want to go back to the same place in Spain!

Riding: 4 hours

Today you will set out from San José towards Los Escullos, following wide paths that run along the coast and offer impressive panoramic views out to sea. Dinner and overnight at a hotel in the Tabernas desert.

Day 4 - Tabernas Natural Park - in the footsteps of Clint Eastwood

Riding: 5 hours

Meeting up with your horses again this morning, you will begin your first ride into the heart of the Tabernas Desert, known as Spanish Hollywood. Explore deep canyons that were once ridden on horseback by legends like Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach. The settings will evoke images of cinematic Arizona or the Sonoran desert of Mexico. During the 1960s, this region was used extensively as the backdrop for the filming of many well-known spaghetti westerns.

You'll enjoy a picnic lunch at the Cañón de la Emboscada today and a a BBQ dinner back at your hotel in the evening.

From there you will head to Fort Bravo, a movie scene set now open as a visitor attraction for those who have an interest in the old spaghetti western films. On arrival in this story-setting town, you will feel transported into a gun-slinger film; see the sheriff catching the bandits that have robbed the
bank or the saloon doors swinging and the curtains twitching at high noon.

You'll enjoy a picnic lunch inside the Fort Bravo fort and a chance to walk the streets and explore the Mexcian town next door.

After lunch, you will head by road to the Sierra Nevada and the final phase of your adventure.

Dinner and overnight at a hotel in Guadix.

Day 6 - La Pantaneta - paths of the shepherds

On saddling up, your destination today is the Pantaneta, a picturesque lake fed with the melt waters that roll off of the Sierra Nevada peaks. You will follow barely visible shepherds' Paths, which offer magnificent views of the altiplano at 1,200 meters of altitude, and up through dense pine forests.

You will enjoy a picnic lunch in La Pantaneta. Those with an intrepid spirit can take a refreshing swim in the lake!
In the afternoon you will make your way back down to the farm, leave the horses here for the night once more and then head back to your accommodation in Quadix for the night.

Day 7 - Sierra Nevada - Camarate

Riding: 5 hours

After breakfast and the short 15-minute drive to the horses, you will set off today in the direction of El Camarate.

As we ascend the mountain slopes, you will follow easy paths, bordered by forests of holm oaks and olive trees. These same paths were once used to guide herds of cattle and bulls to the high mountain meadows during the summers. Around noon, you will have reached an altitude of 2,000 meters, in a place with wide meadows and Atlantic forests. Here you will stop to enjoy the picnic that you have carried with you in your saddlebags.

After lunch, you will begin the descent back down towards the town of Cogollos de Guadix.

This evening, your hosts have planned a wonderful evening flamenco show with a gastronomic dinner (not included)

Day 8 - Departure

Following a talk about safety we will saddle our horses. This morning's ride will take you to Genoveses Beach, well known for its white sand dunes. These dunes have featured in many films, such as Indiana Jones and Lawrence of Arabia, and are easily recognised. You will enjoy the beautiful landscapes and some of the last unspoiled beaches of the Mediterranean.

Day 3 - The Cliffs of Los Escullos: The Pirate Trail

Riding: 3 hours

This morning you follow the cliffs of Cabo de Gata natural park, offering spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea. This area is famous for its gold mines and the beaches were often visited by pirates. Follow a narrow path along the coast where you can see small lookout towers and castles, used for surveillance and to prevent the pirates from reaching land.

Day 4 - The Volcanoes Valley

Riding: 3 hours

To the north of the park, the Sierra de Gata mountains have preserved the craters of ancient volcanoes, creating a lunar like landscape. They were active 15-16 million years ago. Cabo de Gata is an arid area and its people used the huge volcanic cone to irrigate their crops located at the bottom of the mountain.

You will ride your horses on the slopes of the volcanoes and gallop along the paths that lead to water running down to the sea.

Day 5 - The Andalusian Cortijos

Riding: 3 hours

As you make your way into the Cabo de Gata Natural Park, you will pass some typical Andalusian buildings - the famous cortijos - some of Arabic origin. These are isolated houses where the families who worked in the fields lived, some of which became small white self sufficient towns with rainwater harvesting systems (aljibes), These were rudimentary installations for the cultivations of cereals (eras) and windmills to make flour. You will have the chance to tour some of these to learn more about the history of Andalusia.

Day 6 - Monsul Beach

Riding: 3 hours

Monsul is a 400m long beach surrounded by rock formations of volcanic origin and with a huge sand dune at the back. In the middle of the beach is a large rock that has become the emblem of the beach and natural park - La Peineta de Monsul. The rock is shaped like a giant wave trying to get back to sea. Steven Spielberg decided to use this beach and other locations in Almeria to film Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade starring Harrison Ford and Sean Connery,
