Ride Description

The castle is located one and a half hours from Rome half way between Orvieto and Siena closely bordering with the regions of Tuscany and Umbria. It is an unspoilt land with hills covered by oak forests and beautiful plains, an ideal place for horse riding.

The splendid 17th century castle (complete with fairytale tower) has been the property of the same noble family for centuries. The last generation of the family has breathed new life into the residence by restoring the cottages and farmhouse once used by the farmers.

A perfect location for family holidays when you can explore the various neigbouring historic towns including Orvieto, Sorano, Acquapendente and Grotte Di Castro. They offer sensational Tuscan cuisine, fantastic cookery courses and unique weddings in the castle grounds. The Castle is also an ideal place for horse riding holiday. On their exciting trail excursions, they travel as far as Proceno, Lake Bolsena and to the beautiful nature reserve Selva Del Lamone.

The ancient estate is surrounded by enchanting countryside in the less inhabited and unspoiled territories of Italy. The castle was the residence of a cardinal at the middle of 1800 and a summer country holiday site for young Pope Pius XII. It’s still owned by the same family whose members will share with you their love of horses and will be happy to invite you for visiting the castle and do some wine tasting.

In this wonderful setting is an equestrian centre which offers you top class riding for all the family and a choice of programmes. You can make your trip as active or sedate as you like but you are guaranteed fantastic riding with English speaking staff to accompany you. There are two outdoor riding schools, one with jumps, and here we can arrange lessons from beginners upwards. Dressage lessons can also be provided.

See Programmes.

Food & Accommodation

Just below the castle stands a handsome XVIII farmhouse, the original centre of the estate's farming activities. The farmhouse has been skillfully converted with careful attention to conserving authenticity together with comfort and privacy.

The very large farmhouse now contains eight charming apartments and fourteen bedrooms mostly furnished with original pieces.

On the ground floor opening onto the main terrace, overlooking the swimming pool, there is a large 'taverna' with brick vaulted ceilings. The space is divided into three main areas including a dining room and billiard room with table tennis facilities. There is also a large kitchen available for all the guests and equipped for cooking courses as well.

Two of the apartments sleep six to eight as they have four double bedrooms each with their own bathroom facilities. There is an apartment for six and two that sleep four to five. The smallest apartment sleeps four.

All the bedrooms have ensuite facilties and the apartments are fully equipped for self-catering.

The food here is fantastic and you will enjoy some of the wonderful Tuscan dishes served by the many restaurants in the area and at the farmhouse. Tuscany is renowned for its wonderful regional cooking and the delicious local wines and cheeses.

Breakfasts are served at the farmhouse. Wonderful dinners are served at local restaurants and trattorias so you can sample some of the delicious local cooking.

Activities

The facilities here are fantastic for all the family. There are two private swimming pools, a tennis court, indoor games room and plenty of green grass and a mini soccer pitch for those active children.

A vast network of country tracks, bridleways and public footpaths cover the area and are still used by farmers and shepherds.

The mountain biker is allowed to cross this land freely in any direction.
You can rent a bicycle from the castle and head off alone or ask for a guide and benefit from his expertise and knowledge of the area.

You can hop on one of the 4x4 guided tours following old tracks through lakes, over hills and through forests to uncover interesting and mysterious sites that even some of the locals don't know about.

You can visit the best Etruscan archeological sites as well as ruins of the ancient town of Castro and caves with carvings in the rock. In the summer it is possible to experience a unique snorkelling adventure.

Beneath the water, on the beautiful southern shores of Lake Bolsena a fantastical archeologicall site is concealed. Plunge into the warm and crystal clear waters and with a mask and flippers you will see the remains of a human settlement from the pre-Etruscan period.

Medieval Castle Tour

Saturday: Arrival in Rome Fiumicino airport or Orvieto and transfer to Grotte di Castro and to S. Cristina Castle, where you will be accommodated for the next three nights. You meet with your guide, take a first glance at the horses and enjoy a great dinner before your overnight.

Sunday - Lake Bolsena: Day ride to Lake Bolsena. From the castle you ride through the neighboring farmland, through chestnut woods and using an ancient track which will carry you right above the crater of Lake Bolsena, the largest volcanic lake in Europe. The descent of the crater will start from the village of Gradoli, dominated by an impressive renaissance palace - it was meant to be the wedding gift of Pope Paulus III Farnese to his nephew around the middle of 1500. While riding, you will witness some breath–taking views of the lake and surrounding area and of the two islands Isola Bisentina and Martana.

The shore of the lake will be reached after crossing the fields just before the water. You will then border the lake ending on the beach where the horses will be set into a canter before crossing a ford where a small river joins the lake. After that you finally reach your midday stop. Lunch is served on the terrace of a typical trattoria right on the beach - Antonietta the cook will serve delicious local food. In the right season, if you wish to cool off in the water, a swim in the lake can be done before starting riding back up. As you head up back to the castle you will note many Etruscan tombs scattered throughout the countryside, some reused by farmers as cellars for their wine but still serving as a reminder of the ancient history which abounds in this area. You will be passing through the archeological area of Pianezze, literally full of Etruscan tombs dating back 2600 years. Once at the top of the crater, you turn right through some vineyards where again a breathtaking view of lake Bolsena will provide a wonderful opportunity to rest the horses and take some photographs. After crossing the vineyards you reach the shepherds' trail in the woods that will lead you back to the Santa Cristina Castle estate.

Monday - Lake Mezzano: Day ride to Lake Mezzano. The Lake Mezzano
area is of great interest both historically and naturally. The lake was once a volcanic crater and historical site with human settlements going back to the pre-etruscan era (aprox 2700 years ago). Later it was submerged by water due to earthquakes. It is now part of the Selva del Lamone regional park due to its beauty and to the fact that many birds find a shelter there. Your excursion takes horses and riders through the beautiful countryside, up into the wooded hills which surround Onano. Here the horses have the opportunity to canter along a wonderful natural passage surrounded by trees. At the top of this plateau you have a chance to take in the dazzling scenery before you carry on down past local farms. This path heads into a very old wood made by huge chestnut trees that lead you into a flat open plain which offers great scenery. Here, if desired, horses can canter up the old tracks before you reach the marshlands and vineyards which surround the lake Mezzano itself.

In a fantastic position on top of a hill overlooking the lake is the small farm where the restaurant is based. Here you stop for a nice lunch with a fantastic view whilst your horses rest in a paddock. During the warmer months you can also swim in the lake with its crystal clear waters. In the afternoon, you ride back following the old Brigands trail, taking in a few historical sights on the way.

Tuesday - Sorano: Ride from S Cristina to Sorano. This day will offer you a fantastic mix of good riding and a plunge in history. After leaving the castle's hilly woodland, the ground opens up into a more scenic view with the Tuscan mountains in the background. The tracks are more levelled and the ground allows an easy trot with some canter. Your lunch break will be organised in a fantastic historical spot next to the ruins of a medieval castle named Vitozza - a picnic perfectly prepared will be laid out with tables and chairs on a lawn atop the hill where the ruins are. Vitozza is a magical place and a medieval strong hold built with two castles around the 11th century A.D. by the Aldobrandeschi powerful family. Later in the centuries it was a refuge to many people escaping from the destruction of the continuous warfare between clans in the area. After lunch a gentle track will lead you towards the area of Sorano. Horses will sleep in a farm a few km from the hotel. This unique hotel just inside the medieval Orsini fortress of Sorano will provide your accommodation for the next two days. The position is incredible as the place is on the side of a big gorge created by river Lente, overlooking Sorano. Dinner will be served in a restaurant next to the fortress.

Wednesday - Around Sorano: Full-day ride in the unique area of Sorano with its age-old, narrow roads cut into the tough rock and brought to perfection by the Etruscans. There are innumerable grave sites all over the hills. You will cross through the village of Pitigliano bordering the ancient walls near to where you will stop for lunch. Again a nice picnic will be laid out in a beautiful spot on a hill. Back in Sorano for dinner in the same restaurant in the village.

Thursday - Proceno: From Sorano you depart in the morning to the Castle of Proceno. You ride through rocky hills into the valley of the river Lente with marvelous views of the mountains of Amiata and Cetona. Picnic lunch in the vicinity of Castellottieri. The way then goes uphill in the afternoon sun, with a stunning view over soft cornfields and sheep pastures. Finally, you will reach the castle of Proceno, your next accommodation. Proceno is a stunning XI cent. castle at the centre of the village. Your accommodation is in one of the many apartments inside the castle itself. It used to be the last stronghold of the pope before Tuscan enemy territory strategically positioned themselves above the via cassia, an old roman road.

Friday - Castle to Castle: A descent into the river Stridolone valley, and up on the other side through hilly woodland, takes you to an 18th century ex-convent. In the distance you can see the Fortress of Proceno. After a lunch stop your ride takes you through the most unspoiled Tuscan countryside. Crossing the Montorio game reserve, if you are lucky pheasants, fallow-deer, and boars will be spotted whilst riding by. The group will reach the outskirts of the village of Onano and the XVI century, little country church of Madonna delle Grazie, from where you will have a beautiful view of the medieval village walls. Now the country road turns north into enchanting countryside on the border between Lazio and Southern Tuscany. Soon you reach Castello Cristina for your farewell dinner and last night's sleep.

Saturday: Check out in the morning.
