Reviews

Very friendly staff and relaxing holiday - staff always had the client's needs/wants in mind and were very generous. Trails were varied and challenging but could also be adapted for more novice riders. (Favourite memory?) Experiencing a new culture and way of life. Also sitting by the pool after a long day's ride - it was the perfect end to the day. The day visit to Plitvice park was also one for the books. Beautiful scenery and company! Food was all delicious and homegrown, accommodation was comfortable and spacious. I was very happy with my horse, Shauma. She fitted me perfectly and helped me to get back into riding quickly. Tack fitted horses well and was clean. Our guide was very experienced and knowledgeable of the trails and horses and was friendly with good English. (Suggested improvements?) Nothing! It was wonderful!

Most enjoyable for everyone in our family. Impressed by attention to detail at the ranch and on the rides - they tried so hard to ensure we had a good time. Food was delicious, home-cooked and plentiful. Bedrooms were comfortable and aircon a bonus. Great to have a pool too. The horses were mostly young, energetic and easy to control. We had Miso as guide mostly and he was excellent in his knowledge of the area.

I have just got back from Old Mulberry ranch in Croatia and to say the least it was amazing. The people are friendly, the food is fresh and homemade and the horses were brilliant. The fixed programme is definitely only for experienced riders but it is one I would recommend and I look forward to going back next year :)

Exceeded all expectations. Milorad, Bojan and their staff could not have done more for us. There is a lovely, relaxed, friendly atmosphere, they were always checking that we were happy, offering more food and drink and keeping us entertained. Old Mulberry is a happy place - I enjoyed every minute! Very happy with my horse, Stella. She was fast and forward-going but responsive and I always felt safe and secure.

Ride Description

In the heart of Croatia, 50km south of Zagreb, lies the charming village of Golinja which is home to the Old Mulberry Country Estate. The farm is perfectly situated in this rural setting, surrounded by picturesque countryside which is a haven for those looking to spend their holidays in the saddle as well as their non-riding companions. The destination takes its name from an old mulberry tree around which the estate has been built and which still offers a shady spot to relax on hot summer days. The farm is the vision of the head of Mraovic family, Milorad, who is the founder and First Secretary of the Croatian Gallop Association and has a great love and knowledge of horses. After leaving a hectic job in Zagreb he decided to create this fairytale-like estate beside a fading village, with a view to bringing guests into this region to experience life in the way his ancestors used to live. With the support of his family he has lovingly restored the old houses and taken great care to renovate the farm buildings sympathetically in order to offer visitors comfortable accommodation, whilst keeping in mind the traditions of the area.

Nowadays the estate covers over 75 acres and offers guests the chance to experience traditional farm life with a focus on all the good things - great riding, hearty food and drink, true Croatian hospitality and untouched nature. All guests can enjoy the peace and tranquility of the area whilst riders will be in their element as they explore the pretty green meadows, old-world villages and unspoilt hamlets, orchards, vineyards, woodlands and more. Many of the tracks and fields are perfect for long canters whilst others are more adventurous and take you deep into nature. The landscapes are home to deer and wild boar whilst goats, chickens and geese wait back at the farm with the horses. There are plenty of chances to absorb culture and to meet with locals who are happy to share their cuisine and traditions including music and folk songs, usually accompanied by a drop of schnapps! Auntie Ljubica prepares delicious, home-cooked food using local produce such as fresh cottage cheese and eggs as well as the farm’s own bacon, salami, juice, jam, wine and schnapps. You won’t go hungry here!

For non-riders and riders who would like a break from horses then there is still much to do and see with several sightseeing trips available in the vicinity. The most notable of these is the Plitvice National Park which is a breathtaking natural wonder with some of the world's most impressive lakes. It is under the protection of UNESCO and recognised as one of the most beautiful natural locations in Europe. Guests at the farm can also enjoy swimming in the pool, relaxing in the sauna, walking, cycling, tractor rides, horse and carriage rides or a trip to the thermal pools in Topusko where you can relax and enjoy a massage.

This is a welcoming, friendly destination which is family-run and has been designed specifically for riders and their friends and families. If you are looking for a taste of Croatian hospitality and to enjoy some pretty rural surroundings then this is the right place for you! The estate has been visited by both Sue and Holly from Far and Ride and they would be happy to tell you all about it, please just get in touch.

Food & Accommodation

There are two accommodation options when staying at the ranch:

The first and most commonly used option is a modern 'mini hotel' with eight bedrooms, each with its own en-suite shower room. This accommodation overlooks the outdoor swimming pool and patio. All the accommodation has air conditioning and is equipped with TV sets and free WIFI. The double bedrooms have either twin beds, queen or king size beds.

The second choice is more rustic and traditional, staying in a wooden cottage/apartment with two bedrooms (each with its own bathroom) and a small terrace overlooking the wildlife park. There is a small kitchenette and common area with a dining table. This option requires a small surcharge.

New for 2017 is a common house situated next to the mini hotel. This features a living area with sitting room, small dining room and a kitchenette. Guests are welcome to help themselves to a drink from the fully-stocked fridge (using an 'honesty bar' system), to make themselves a tea or coffee or to have a snack. There is a selection of books and movies, with a flatscreen TV, and also a PC with internet connection to keep in touch with loved ones back home. This house is open all hours.

The ranch set-up includes a well-maintained outdoor swimming pool with decking and loungers, a jacuzzi, a wonderful outdoor dining area, a small outdoor bar, a dining room decorated in traditional style and WiFi access in these communal areas. There is also a traditional bowling area, open grass court for volleyball/futsal and a wildlife park which deer visit most mornings. There is a small, traditional shop on site so guests can take home some of the home made foods, drinks and traditional handicrafts made on the estate.

You won't go hungry here! For those who appreciate a home-cooked meal, like your grandmother used to make, then you will be delighted to meet Auntie Ljubica who is known for her delicious fare. You will be served three hearty meals a day with an additional snack on the trail on longer riding days. Dinner/supper is usually three courses with a starter, a main course and a dessert. Wine, beer and juices are all included with the meals. The farm produces its own bacon, sausages, apple juice, cordials, plum jam, pear and plum schnapps and white wine.

Breakfasts are primarily served buffet-style but eggs are generally cooked to order. Juice, cordial, coffee and tea is available.

Special dietary requirements can generally be accommodated with prior notice, please feel free to contact us to discuss your needs.

Activities

For the non-rider there is plenty to do free of charge. There is a swimming pool, traditional bowling, ping pong, open grass volleyball, bicycle rides around the estate, wildlife park and beautiful walks through the forest.

There is also a host of activities available at an additional cost - payment for these can be made directly at the ranch (cash only) or with us at your time of booking.

Options:

Trail Cart Course - if you can't be bothered having to prepare for riding, getting on the horse and all that stuff, your hosts can offer you a ride in a more comfortable way. You follow the riding group on one of their daily trails in a two-wheel sport horse cart, with one horse and a coachman driver. You can ride this way for the whole day, following the riders' entire trail, or only part of it. €80 per person/per day.

Fishing on the Kupa River - fishing on the nearby river from the shore or from a boat. Your hosts provide you with all the equipment, the boat, a guide and a small lunch. The catch, however, is entirely up to you. As are the stories afterwards! €20 per hour.

Game Hunting - your hosts take you to their hunting blind early in the morning or late at night where firstly you will feed some animals. Then you will hunt for wild boar, deer and various birds. Benji, the ranch Border Collie, will accompany you. Use of rifles and equipment is included. €30 per hour.

Beginners Riding - if you've never ridden before then the ranch can show you what riding is actually all about. There is a closed riding arena (manege) just for that purpose and you will have the supervision of an instructor. €27 per hour.

Wagon and Coach Rides - you'll take two horses, a wagon and up to 5 travellers and off you go down hills, across meadows and along the surrounding roads. The driver comes along as well! €43 per hour.

Rent a Bike - smaller and bigger ones available. €3 per hour.

Rent a Tractor - the ranch's sturdy Steyr vintage tractor comes into the story here. Your hosts will fire this bad boy up and off you go around the estate. You can sit either in the tractor or on the trail behind it, on some hay bales. €20 per hour.

Rent a Bus - besides the vintage tractor, the ranch bus is also vintage. An older lady, a little bigger at the rear, but still in excellent condition. If she decides to start then you'll take a tour through the surroundings, along with some schnapps from the ranch. The band is optional... if you run into one on the way! €65 per hour.

Rafting on the Una River - for the adventurer in you there is a special deal - fast water rafting on the magnificent river Una which runs along the border of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. A splendid way to discover one of the last completely pure rivers in Europe and to get a kick of adrenaline whilst you're at it. €55 per person (minimum of 4 people).

Bird-watching - you'll be taken to the nearby Lonjsko polje, one of several Croatian top destinations for bird watching. With its vast wetland area it is home to over 100 different bird species from the small, Spotted Woodpecker to the grand White-Tailed Eagle. A unique and magnificent place. Prices defined on the spot depending on group size.

Sighting in Zagreb - Your hosts take you on a day long trip to the nation's capital, Zagreb. A beautiful and exceptionally charming mid-European city. Beautiful architecture, warm and courteous people and great food is what makes Zagreb a truly enjoyable place. Prices defined on the spot depending on group size.

Mushroom, Chestnut and Plant-Picking - the forests surrounding the estate are filled with dozens of different sorts of mushrooms as well as chestnuts, wild pears and strawberries, plums and hundreds of different sorts of flowers. Programmes

Mulberry Farmhouse Trail

This seven night riding programme is the perfect way to experience the beautiful and unspoilt Croatian countryside. The ride includes five days in the saddle exploring varied routes in the region, including a two day trail when the horses stay out overnight, and also a non-riding day with a visit to the world-famous Plitvice Lakes. During your stay you will experience true Croatian hospitality, both at the ranch and when meeting locals along the way.

Day 1: Saturday

Today you will take a group transfer from the airport to the estate, taking some time to settle into your comfortable accommodation before enjoying a complimentary welcome drink and an introduction to your surroundings and hosts. Lunch and dinner are served today depending on the time of your arrival.

Day 2: Sunday - The Ranch and Beyond

After a hearty breakfast riders are taken to the stables and introduced to the horses. The first ride will take you through many picturesque villages, riding uphill until you reach the ruin of an old fortress. This is an interesting archeological site dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. You will canter and gallop over open grassy fields, a good chance to become accustomed to your horse. The route will take you by the old watermill, through the age-old forest and back to the estate where you will stop for lunch and a rest.

Later on you will head out for your second ride, a smooth walk and trot through the estate grounds itself, through the open pastures, hidden woodland paths and by some spring wells. This is a lovely opportunity to explore the estate's own lands and to admire its picturesque setting at a relaxed pace. Your relaxing ride takes you back to the ranch in time for a delicious dinner.

Approximate riding distances: 18km + 8km.

Day 3: Monday - The Riding Biathlon!

Today's adventure combines great riding opportunities with boating on the river Kupa. You will ride out from the ranch following old hunting routes through forests and meadows, eventually reaching the banks of the Kupa. The horses will be left to rest here and guests will climb into traditional wooden boats, setting off on an hour-long rafting trip on the calm waters until reaching a small, sandy beach. This is a great spot to relax or to enjoy some swimming whilst a traditional lunch is prepared. After finishing the meal you will saddle up again and ride another route back to the farm.

Approximate riding distances: 23km in the saddle (and 2.5km by boat!).

Day 4: Tuesday

Today is a rest day for both horse and rider and guests are transported to the Plitvice National Park with its incredible lakes and waterfalls. This attraction is protected by UNESCO and is one of the most beautiful places in Croatia, if not Europe as a whole. Countless waterfalls, some large and some small, create an amazing scene of natural beauty and wonder. Guests pay the entry fee themselves directly at the ticket-office (prices vary according to season) and will later be transported back to the ranch for overnight, following a gourmet dinner in one of the park's restaurants.

Day 5: Wednesday - To the Spa

Today your trail will take you through an old oak and beech forest where guests often get a chance to spot some of the local wildlife in its natural habitat. Animals include different types of deer, wild boar, hare and fox. You will enjoy a picnic in a remote part of the forest where you can listen to the sounds of the forest animals and birds. After this relaxing lunch, you will remount and make your way out of the forest - the trail opens up into magnificent pastures and plains where it is possible to canter and gallop. At the end of the trail you will come to the town of Topusko where you will settle your horses next to the Top Terme Spa and Wellness centre. Guests are taken to the spa to relax and enjoy the hot springs pool, thermal water bath or a massage (entry fee is included but massages come at an additional cost). In the evening you will enjoy a delicious dinner in the spa hotel restaurant before returning to the ranch by van (15 minute drive).

Approximate riding distance: 24km.

Day 6: Thursday - King Peter's Mountain

Today's trail will take you almost to the top of King Peter's mountain, known locally as 'Petrova Gora'. This ride is a bit more challenging for the rider. On arrival at the mountain site the group will stop at a small bee-keepers where the owner, a lovely woman called Marijana, will prepare a traditional Croatian lunch using the natural wood-fire oven. Surrounded by shady forests and in the company of buzzing bees, you can settle down into one of the comfortable lawn chairs for a rest and some relaxation. Guests are offered a sample of the delicious homemade honey and can buy some to take home if they wish.

After enjoying Marijana's wonderful hospitality it's time to climb to the top of the mountain, 512m high, where you will find a monument to the fallen solders of World War II. The view from the top is amazing - this is the highest point around for many miles and the view extends in all directions. The locals say that on a very clear day it's even possible to see the capital, Zagreb, which lies approximately 60km away.

In the afternoon your ride will descend down the mountain to a hunting lodge where a dinner of venison is served. After this you will return to the farm by van, a 15 minute drive.

Approximate riding distance: 24km.

Day 7: Friday - Back to the Ranch

This is the last riding day and you will head through some interesting terrain. You will pass steep hills, flat plains and a dense forest, through swamps and shrubby gorges. The trail is a bit longer than earlier rides but is equally as exciting. In the early evening you will be served a special farewell dinner by candlelight, accompanied by top quality local wine. You will be serenaded by guitar and accordian by your hosts and perhaps you might sing along to the traditional Croatian music.

Seaside Extension

As an extension to the fixed seven day riding programmes, the ranch offers a three night (or more) trip to the beautiful Croatian coast and the magnificent Island of Rab.

The island of Rab is situated in the northern part of the Adriatic Sea. People usually call Croatia the land of a thousand islands, which is very much true, and Rab is right in the middle of it all. Crystal clear seas, beautiful stony beaches and heartwarming locals are what this island is famous for. Add to that a rich history of the island’s settlements, which date back hundreds of years, and you can see why this island is one of the most popular in Croatia.

The Hotel Carolina is a recently fully renovated 4-star hotel situated in a secluded area north of the main town, some 20 minutes walking distance. It offers all the standard amenities one would hope to find in a 4 star hotel. Double bedrooms come equipped with AC, satellite TV, Wi-Fi, “en-suite” bathrooms, a mini bar, and a safe. The lobby and entrance area house several restaurants and bars, and there is an outdoor swimming pool located at the rear of the hotel, overlooking the beach and the sea. The beach itself is beautiful - stretching around the hotel, it’s mostly of stone and sand, scattered with hundreds of shady trees making it ideal to spend the entire day just lying about, going swimming and relaxing.

There are also many interesting trips, excursions and activities available at the hotel at extra cost.

This extension trip includes:

- three nights of accommodation in Hotel Carolina in double or single rooms

- half board (breakfasts and dinners)

- transport from the Old Mulberry Country Estate via minivan or car (ferry tickets included).

Alternatively, we can provide an offer for a stay in a neighbouring hotel, the Grand Hotel Imperial, on request.

Zagreb City Extension

As an extension to the fixed seven day riding programmes, this ranch also offers a three nights (or more) trip to the capital of Croatia, the charming and historic Mid-European city of Zagreb.

The city of Zagreb, capital of Croatia, lying on the historic and political threshold between East and West, illustrates both the continental and Mediterranean spirit of the nation it spearheads. Zagreb is the cultural, scientific, economic, political and administrative center of the Republic of Croatia, and is home to the Croatian Parliament, Government and President.

With a population of nearly one million, Zagreb contains almost a quarter of the entire population of Croatia. Over the centuries, the city was inhabited by people coming from all over Europe and, in recent years, by people coming from different parts of Croatia, ensuring a rich cultural life. The cosmopolitan buzz of Zagreb will soon strike you. Almost everything is accessible on foot – from your hotel to the theatre, wandering around the old Upper Town or through the bustling streets of the more modern Lower Town, which hasn’t lost any of its charm despite the eternal march of time. Venture out and let the moment take hold. There is something special about the whisper of leaves as you stroll through the spring colours of downtown Zrinjevac Park. There is magic in the reflections of the gas lanterns in the Upper Town, as the songs of the street performers evoke their own emotions with their distinctive sound. As night falls, everything becomes soft and subdued; the twinkle of candles in the cathedral and at the mystical Stone Gate; the cafés beckoning you in the twilight with their warm hues. Zagreb offers a truly unique experience, one of romance, one of the heart.

With a total of 24 individually and beautifully decorated rooms, the hotel Villa Tina offers its guests discreet modern comfort combined with a touch of Croatian lifestyle. The hotel is located in the green heart of Zagreb. Close proximity to one of the largest and most beautiful parks in the region, named Maksimir, and the urban Zoo allows for an ideal balance of historical and cultural treasures. With a tranquil location and warm charm, Vila Tina is the ultimate retreat for your cultural capital excursion. Indulge in a warm ambience, where hospitability meets modern comfort. Double bedrooms come equipped with “en-suite” bathrooms, AC, satellite TV and Wi-Fi.
