Reviews

The riding locations are lovely, particularly the beach ride. Deserted long sandy beach! Richard the owner is very proud of his country and his horses. He's very friendly and helpful. The hotel was excellent, very comfortable and the food was delicious.

Ride Description

This destination offers a lovely based stay for guests wishing to explore the true beauty of Latvia. Based in the Adazi region, guests are invited to ride through beautiful hilly pine forests and wild landscapes before heading to the spectacular white sand beaches of Lilaste nature park. These areas have been specially protected and now you can explore their untouched charm on horseback. This nature reserve spans from Vidzeme seaside at Lilaste to White Dune and features many protected plants. The trip is based around the mid-section of this and offers riding along the beautiful beaches and dunes, which over time have become covered in pine forests.

About 40% of the Adazi region is covered by forest, amidst which there are numerous lakes. Many economic activities are prohibited here due to the level of protection offered through its status as a nature reserve. Horses provide the perfect means by which to explore the land and to make the most of the wild beaches. The sound of the waves, scent of the meadows and the freshness of the sea make this a beautiful riding holiday.

This riding holiday is organised through our Latvian tour operator whose staff have more than 30 years experience. They use their own horses and guides for all of their routes, transporting the horses to different Latvian destinations in order to offer different programmes (available on other pages of our site). Their riding holidays are designed to show you the beauty of the Baltic States, away from the tourist rush and stressful everyday lives. Any route can be altered to create your perfect trip or to accommodate for the less experienced rider.

Food & Accommodation

Accommodation for this ride is in a 4* hotel with guests generally sharing double or twin rooms:

Porthotel: http://www.porthotel.lv/

In most cases single supplement is available on request and at an added cost.

Meals included in the price start with dinner on arrival day and end with breakfast on departure day. Some lunches are taken as outdoor picnics during the rides or eaten in restaurants. Each meal is usually 2 or 3 courses and there are often specially selected menus where guests can have a limited choice or 2 out of 3 courses. National dishes are usually included for some of the meals.

Vegetarians are regular guests here and can expect meals such as tasty salads, risotto with vegetables and parmesan or apple strudel with vanilla ice cream.

Activities

For those looking for other activities when not riding, it is well worth a visit to the Old Town of Riga which is one of many World Heritage Sites. Riga was founded in 1201 and is the capital of Latvia and the largest city in the Baltic States. The area around Old Town was mostly built between 1860 and 1914 and features many buildings which resemble the splendour of places such as Berlin, Paris and Rome. You can explore medieval streets and can absorb the city's culture.

Other places to visit here include:

- The Ethnographic Open-Air Museum was founded in 1924. This covers 87 hectares and displays 121 ancient buildings with more than 3000 household objects, representing the history of the Latvian people. Almost all sections of the population and ethnic groups are represented.

- Sigulda is an area situated on a picturesque stretch of the Gauja River valley. The area is sometimes called the "Switzerland of Vidzeme" due to the reddish Devonian sandstone which forms the rocks and caves by the river. After the restoration of Latvian independence in 1991, emphasis was placed on conserving Sigulda's monuments.

- Aerodium is a vertical wind tunnel, a free flight simulator. This was the first vertical wind tunnel in Eastern Europe and breaks the rules of gravity to offer you a fun experience.

A week break with riding in charming forests, by beautiful lakes and on the spectacular beaches of the Baltic Sea. Riders will explore the Lilaste Nature Park and the protected species within it. This is a great programme for those who want to get to know on area and relax on their holiday!

During the programme you stay in the comfortable hotel and do not move accommodation. For four or more riders this route can be altered or shortened in accordance with your preferences.

Example Day by Day Programme:

Day 1 - Arrival and Introduction

You will be collected from Riga airport (or city hotel) and transferred to your hotel where there is time to settle in and relax before meeting the rest of your group for dinner. If there is time, you guide may take you for a short tour of Riga's old town before you head out into the countryside.

Day 2 - Pine Forests of Adazi (20km):

After a safety briefing and introduction to the horses at the stables, you will set off on your first ride along beautiful, hilly pine forest trails and through wild landscapes. These places have been specially protected and now you have the opportunity to explore the wild areas on horseback. In Adazi about 40% of the territory is covered by forests with numerous lakes scattered throughout. If the weather is favourable, there will be a chance to take the horses for a swim in one of these lakes.

After a picnic lunch you continue riding through the forest to the Gauja river. This area is a special nature reserve and is protected from many economic activities. There are several types of rare plant species found here and the area has been included in the Natura2000 network of EU protected areas since 2004.

Day 3 - Forest lakes (25km):

Today you will ride through wild forests, beautiful meadows and alongside picturesque lakes. This lovely experience up close with nature is combined with a visit to explore some of the military heritage of the Soviet Army which can be found here. This day offers wide diversity and will bring you in touch with some particularly gorgeous areas whilst also being fascinating from a historical point of view.

Day 4 - Neverending Forest (30km):

Today you wil ride through seemingly unending forests which are criss-crossed by hidden paths. A truly wild and secluded experience and wonderful for exploring on horseback. Following a nice picnic lunch stop, you will be able to spend the afternoon appreciating the wild nature of the Adazi forest. Weaving through trees, along charming riding trails you will have plenty of opportunity to try all different paces here.

Day 5 - Carnikava (33km):

Today offers some diverse landscapes as you ride - as well as seeing the same river as yesterday you will see a special river which appears to start and end nowhere! After your picnic lunch you ride through forests with hilly terrain and out onto wonderful wild beaches. You will see four different waterways and appreciate the dappled light through the tree cover.

Day 6 - Lilaste Beaches (35km):

A day spent on the white sand beaches of Lilaste nature park. The wide white beaches are flanked by the fresh, green pine forests. Today you will sense your closeness to real untouched nature and will be able to explore the rugged beaches for which Latvia is famous. With almost 500km of shoreline there are plenty of places for riding and today you will make the most of it, riding over the fine sand. Picnic lunch in a beautiful spot and final dinner on return to the hotel.
