Reviews

Excellent hotel, beautiful scenery and lovely horses. Favourite memory was taking the horses in the sea. The garden suite was perfect and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Both horses suited us very well - very fit, forward going and easy to ride too. Danielle and Francesco were both excellent guides and made an effort to be helpful. They care for their horses with devotion.

Ride Description

This highland resort is situated between the brown summit of the Montiferru mountain and the beautiful beaches of Oristano's coastline. Here you can enjoy top class facilities in a luxurious setting - the rooms and suites are beautifully but simply furnished and decorated with wood and elegant fabrics. There is an all year round swimming pool powered by solar energy and a jacuzzi in the grounds.

The farm has a menage and stables where you are able to ride the Anglo-Arabs and Sardinian horses, many of whom have been bred and schooled by Daniele, your host. The family have been breeding horses for more than 100 years and with the help of Marshal Dino Costantini, an Olympic rider, they breed horses for international competitions even to Olympic level. The stables have twelve boxes and riding can be taken as lessons, treks or you can join the trail ride from the mountains to the sea. Alternatively, we can tailor make a programme to suit.

This farm is a special destination, not only for its magnificent location but also the owners' true dedication to Sardinian traditions. Your food is a gastronomic delight - cooked using local, homegrown, organic ingredients making meal times a real pleasure after a day in the saddle. This adds another element to your Sardinian holiday.

This destination has been visited twice by Sue, Managing Director of Far and Ride, so she can tell you all about it!

Food & Accommodation

The accommodation and stables are situated between the brown summit of the Montiferru mountain and the beaches of Oristano's coastline. It is surrounded by woods in a quiet countryside characterised by a magical and intriguing landscape.

There are eight suites and four bedrooms with bathroom, telephone, ISDN line, satellite TV, air conditioning, hair dryer, safe deposit box and bar. Each suite is decorated to a high class standard utilising local stone and materials to provide a truly luxurious stay.

The cuisine here is top class but reflects local specialities so may not suit the more traditional palate. Fresh homegrown organic vegetables, fruit and locally reared meat are served. You will be able to see the kitchen and observe the chef at work.

Dinner includes; starter, first course, second course and dessert. Served in the hotel dining room or on the terrace. Lunch can be prepared on request; a light brunch.

The food here is definitely one of the highlights - a typical meal would be antipasti of wild boar, salamis and olives, pasta with ricotta, barbecued suckling pig and watermelon drizzled with myrto (myrtle liquer).

Trail to the Sea

This is a trail ride through the Montiferru mountains and down to the sea but returning each night to your very comfortable accommodation. You will leave your horses and return to them to resume your ride each day. Your trail will take you over ancient shepherd paths, woody mountains, wild torrents and majestic falls. The limestone volcanic rock, the beautiful smell of the mediterranean herbs and wild plants, the white sandy beaches and clear blue skies make this a wonderful equestrian escape.

Day 1:

Arrival in the afternoon. Relax in your comfortable room and have a drink before dinner which is served around 8 pm. Your guide will give you some information about the week ahead.

Day 2:

Breakfast is served around 8.30. After this you will meet the horses and have a ride to see how you get on with your new horse. Your first ride will be about ninety minutes long. After lunch you can relax in the comfortable grounds and perhaps take a swim or jacuzzi. We can arrange a massage for you (not included). Dinner is served at 8.00.

Day 3:

After breakfast you will leave the hotel and explore the mountains on horseback. The ride will take around 3 hours. Your ride will take you over tracks made by shepherds many years ago. You will ride through huge cork oak forests and fields of sheep, pigs and donkeys. Finally you will climb the first part of the Monte Ferru mountain. Here you will leave the horses to doze in the sunshine and you will return in the jeep to the hotel just in time for lunch. The afternoon is yours to swim or just soak up the sun.

Day 4:

After breakfast you will be driven back to the horses stabled in the mountains. You will saddle up your horse and set off for your ride. The flora consists mainly of mediterranean mountainous species along with rare shrubs and grasses whereas the fauna, quite rich, includes some remarkable specimens, mouflon, boar, Sardinian wild cat, marten, weasel and fox. You will enjoy another 3-4 hour trail hopefully having seen some of this wildlife. You will ride through the village of "San Leonardo" which is famous for its fountains and you enter the protected park of Monte Ferru. You will enter a totally new landscape, full of rocks and big stones, sometimes the terrain looks like the valley of the moon as it is so isolated. You may be lucky and see a mouflon or wild boar but you can look for their tracks. You will ride up to 1100 metres and then you can see the sea - a wonderful breathtaking view over the west coast of Sardinia. Your ride descends to 800 metres and the horses will stay over at Mount Seneghe. You will be driven back to the hotel by jeep On your return once again you can relax and enjoy the lovely grounds and facilities here. Dinner is served around 8.00 pm.

Day 5:

After breakfast you will leave the hotel by jeep and find your horse stabled in the mountains. You will help get your horse ready and leave Mount Seneghe and head towards the sea. You will ride from a height of 800 metres down to 50 metres. A ride of approximately three hours. Today your rides passes through a huge forest with a mystical atmosphere - the landscape and vegetation is totally different to the day before. There are many different sorts of trees and it is very green and humid. Today you will stop for a sandwich and take in the beautiful countryside. Your ride then continues down the mountain passing Mediterranian Macchia (typical vegetation for Sardinia). The aroma of the herbs and the unusual plants will be evocative and memorable. Finally you ride through cactus which seem more typical of Mexico. You will arrive at the paddock at Ranch Catzeddu and you are now back at 50 metres above sea level. Again, you will return to the hotel by jeep and you will be able to relax in the comfortable hotel grounds.

Day 6:

After breakfast you will be driven back to your horse at Ranch Catzeddu. Today you help get your horse ready and will again ride along the beach and explore this wonderful coastline for around 3.5 hours. You will be able to smell the salty sea water and see the blue sea from afar as you ride through narrow and stony paths and big meadows full of large flowers.

You will through the pine woods and along the Is Arenas beach which is 8 km long. Here the horses can play in the sea water and you will have a wonderful canter on the beach which the horses love. Finally you reach a small stable at "Sa Rocca Tunda" where the horses will stay overnight. Riders can enjoy a swim in the sea which is only 30 metres from the stable.

Day 7:

After breakfast you return to the stables by the sea in the jeep. You will get your horses ready for the last ride of 4.5 hours. The landscape is again totally different from the previous day. You will ride through the protected area of the island of Sinis on horseback. You will pass through pinewoods and enjoy a canter through the paths in the fields surrounded by meadows full of beautiful flowers. You will get to the steep cliffs where there is a fantastic view of the emerald green water beyond. Finally you reach the famous "rice corn beach" of Maimoni which is covered with glittering white quartz sand. Together with the intense blue of the sea - it really is a blaze of colour.

This is the end of the trail. Your horse will be collected by lorry and returned to the hotel. The riders will have a last drink together and say a fond farewell to the horses they have made friends with over the last few days.
