Reviews

If you are looking to ride a fine Lusitano through this beautiful countryside, enjoy some first class tuition with a top class instructor, then this is the place to visit. Antonio is the perfect host, I was taken out to restaurants to enjoy the local cuisine along with some fine wines. The accommodation is very comfortable and is just two minutes from the stables, and Ingrid is most welcoming and could not do enough for me. I warmly recommend this lovely destination.

Ride Description

Ride in the Portuguese sunshine on well-schooled Lusitano horses, just little over an hour from Lisbon. Santa Bárbara Equestrian Centre was founded in 1996 by Antonio Camacho Soares and Joaquim Batuca, both experienced trainers in dressage, jumping, TREC and eventing. They are able to take care of riders of different levels, from beginners to competition riders, and offer an affordable daily riding programme which combines hacking and tuition in the discipline of your choice. The destination offers a relaxed atmosphere, comfortable accommodation (with a fabulous pool!), evening meals in different restaurants and, most importantly, a selection of horses in excellent condition. Facilities include outdoor menages for flatwork and jumping, an indoor arena and even a small, rustic cross-country course of around 1km, fences ranging from approximately 80cm - 1m.

Constância is a small town rich in history which stands on the shores of the Tejo and Zezere rivers. The beautiful town is located in the district of Santarém, characterised by its paved streets, whitewashed houses and narrow steps. It is also known for having been a place of residence of Luís de Camões, an important figure in Portuguese history who wrote some of his most famous poems here.

This could be the holiday you have dreamed about - quality horses, expert tuition, scenic hacking and time to enjoy the sun by the pool before dinner and drinks in town. The normal riding day consists of a two hour hack in the morning and a lesson of at least one hour in the afternoon. Guests can really improve their skills and confidence whilst making the most of a fantastic location.

You can choose to come here for a weekend, short week or week. We can organise your stay to work around your flights and be totally flexible on arrival and departure day.

Food & Accommodation

You will stay in a small rural hotel just a hundred yards from the stables. This hotel is run by Ingrid and Heinz who are very hospitable hosts. The rooms are spacious and mostly have a small kitchenette with a kettle, fridge and hotplate. The hotel is set in beautiful grounds which are beautifully maintained by Heinz with amazingl plants and citrus trees. The hosts have a lively labrador and several friendly cats. There is a lovely swimming pool in the grounds, ideal for relaxing after riding and there are terraces to sit on and to enjoy the sunshine.

Breakfast at the hotel is plentiful with tea, coffee, juice, cereals, cold meats and cheese and a selection of freshly baked bread with honey and jams. A great start to the day.

This is a half board package, but Antonio will take you to several local cafes to take in some of the local specialities. The cost is around 15 euros per lunch paid locally.

In the evenings, you will all eat together, Antonio will take you to different restaurants so you can sample the delicious dishes local to the area. There are many restaurants in Constanzia and the surrounding villages and they have been chosen by Antonio as they reflect the wonderful cuisine and wine local to this area of Portugal. What a perfect end to the day!

Activities

You may wish to just relax when not riding and the walks around the equestrian centre take you into some picturesque forest tracks. Constância is worth investigating on foot as some of the walks by the river are enjoyable as well as walking around the town itself.

Almourol Castle is worth a visit, situated on an island in the middle of the River Tagus, Almourol is one of the most famous castles in Portugal, because of its historical significance and surrounding landscape. The Castle, has ten towers and stands over a little island located in the middle of the Tajo River, five kilometres far from the village of Constância and from Vila Nova da Barquinha, in the Santarém district. This castle, considered one of the most emblematic military monuments of the Reconquest, was erected in 1171 by the order of Gualdim Pais, the great master of the Order of the Knights Templar, over the old site of a Roman fort. It is well worth a visit.

Programme

Ride in the Sun

The riding here is tailored to suit your needs and you will ride about 2-3 hours a day.  Mostly you will ride out in the mornings for about two hours. The riding here takes you through some wonderful countryside. You will ride through forests of pine, eucalyptus and cork. There are orchards of olive and fruit trees and fragrant herbs. The views of the River Tajo are magnificent. It is possible not to see another person on these rides. The pace will vary according to the terrain. There are some stony sandy undulating tracks but also places where you can enjoy a canter.  In the afternoon you can enjoy a lesson in jumping or dressage.

One of the longer trails takes you alongside the Tajo river for a long canter along the long sandy stretches besides the river. You will arrive in Constancia and enjoy a drink before your return to the centre.

Antonio is a top class instructor and can offer tuition to a very high standard in all disciplines.  He is a very kind sympathetic instructor and he is keen to instil confidence in each and every rider who comes here. Riders will come away feeling proud of their achievements. Riders of all levels will benefit from his guidance and many return.

The maximum number of riders on each lessons is five. Often depending on ability, the group will be split so tuition can be catered to their level.
