Northern Portugal Training and Trails, Portugal

Reviews

Very good holiday which was exactly as I would have expected. The training was excellent and the horses were well looked after. The place was well run and the people were all lovely. I was picked up every day and dropped back to my hotel so no worries about travel. It could not have been any better organized.

Ride Description

Ride in the sun at this top class equestrian facility which is located in the North-West of Portugal, just outside the picturesque town of Esposende. There are two separate riding centres owned by the same family which have extensive facilities including 4 indoor arenas and 3 outdoor arenas as well as a circuit for horse and carriage rides, recreational areas (bar/restaurant) and a tack shop.

Over 90 horses are kept at the centre, with a wide selection of horses available for dressage, showjumping or trail rides. For dressage most of the horses are Lusitano trained up to Prix St Georges level, whilst for show-jumping there are a variety of warmbloods jumping up to 1.35m.

The top quality instructors are all fluent in English and are successful competition riders in their chosen discipline. They are an international group with Swedish, Norwegian and Brazilian instructors working alongside Portuguese.

Alongside the superb tuition on offer, the centre is also ideally situated to offer some spectacular trail rides, including along the beaches of the Atlantic coast or into the magnificent Geres national park. Ride and escape at this wonderful destination.

There are a number of packages to choose from depending on whether you wish to concentrate on Dressage or Show Jumping, or to mix up some lessons with trail rides. There is even a Competition Package offering the chance to compete at the centre and put your training to use!

Food & Accommodation

You stay at the 4* Ofir Beach Resort Hotel which is only 3 minutes from the equestrian centre (transfers are provided each day). The hotel is situated between the ocean and the Cavado River and has direct access to a long sandy beach. There are 191 modern rooms with private bathrooms and balconie.

The restaurant has a panoramic view over the beach and Atlantic ocean and offers tasty regional Portuguese cuisine. There is also a Garden Bar with spacious outdoor seating facing the lawns and decorative gardens.

You will be on a half board basis, so breakfast and lunch are included but dinner is to your own account.

Breakfast will always be taken at the hotel where you can select from the continental buffet.

Mid-morning snacks are provided at the riding centre in case you get peckish between lessons.

Lunch is sometimes at the hotel but more often in local restaurants so that you can sample local dishes such as bacalhau, arroz de pato, piccanha etc.

Drinks are included with meals.

Your evening meal and drinks are to your own account, so you can choose to eat wherever you wish.

Activities

Non-riders are welcome and there are many activities on offer in the local area, besides just relaxing and using the hotel facilities/beach.

The city of Porto is an interesting visit, as is the local town of Esposende.

Just to the north of Esposende is the natural paro of the north coast which is famous for its wetland areas and coastal sand dunes - during the migration period in spring/autumn this is a prime spot for bird watchers.

You can also book kite surfing, canyoning, wine tours and boat trips.
