Description

Horseback trails along the main ridge of the Carpathian mountains take travellers to untouched and pristine mountainous landscapes with old pine forests, pure creeks, dramatic limestone rocks, hidden farming villages, vast fields and lush meadows still cultivated traditionally by locals. Here you can experience unspoilt nature and step back in time at least 50 years. Your guide knows the trails in this region like the back of his hand so you can be guaranteed an insider's tour.

On these trails you'll meet the Szekely - a Hungarian speaking ethnic group from eastern Transylvania that live in the valleys and hills of the eastern Carpathian mountains.

One of the curiosities of this region is Red Lake (Lacu Rosu), Romania's largest naturally dammed mountain lake which came into being in 1837 as a result of a huge landslide. The tips of the broken trunks of spruce trees can still be seen above the surface of the lake, whilst its deep, green waters reflect the rocks of Suhardul Mic Massif. Being within the vicinity of Bicaz gorges, riders can marvel at the picturesque scenery where caves, sinkholes and waterfalls abound.

The mountains are also rich in flora and fauna, with dense forests and plants such as Edelweiss and the Yellow Lady's Slipper. The forest is home to large Carpathian mammals such as brown bears, wolves, lynx and red deer, although you will be more likely to see their tracks than the animals themselves! Chamois were also reintroduced to the area in the 1970's.

The horses are a mixture of locally bred Lipizzaners and Shagya Arabs, ridden in English tack. As your luggage is transported by vehicle rather than pack horse, you can be assured of some fast riding where the terrain allows.

Testimonials

Rochelle T., Oct. 18, 2023

Spectacular! Exceeded all my expectations. Long Canters, and the welcome drinks! Horse was great, no dirt, but also very forward moving. No issues with equipment. Also was lovely that you managed to organise us some helmets to borrow as we were struggling with luggage room.

Nicole L., Sept. 26, 2023

Excellent! Well behaved horses, good quality tack. Lazlo was fantastic! Very accomodating.

Victoria K., Aug. 10, 2023

Well organised fun ride with a great group of people. Yes the horses were responsive, very well looked after and very fit. The guide did a really job matching horses to riders. The tack was suitable and in a good condition.

Felicia L., Nov. 29, 2022

Incredible! Reliable, happy horses who allowed us to enjoy the beautiful scenery rather than worrying about what their hooves were doing on the steep slopes, as well as treating us to some lovely canters on the flat. A wonderful introduction to Romania and a brilliant way to spend a week away from normal life!

Jeppe B., Aug. 1, 2022

Well trained horses, excellent guide and breathtaking scenery. Very nice accommodations and food even in rural areas. Well trained and strong Lipizzaner horses.

Tjitske and Davy, Nov. 10, 2021

We loved the variety in scenery (mountains, forest, fields, nature in general) and the remoteness of the trail. We also loved that it really felt like you were travelling a longer distance, instead of going back to the same place every night. We were pleasantly surprised by the roughness of some parts of the trail (where we had to walk next to our horse and what the horses could do with us on them).

Liz W., Nov. 10, 2021

Wonderful! I had so much fun on this trip. I’ve said other countries were pretty, but there is nothing like the Carpathian mountains and forests. The horses are sure footed, sensible and forward, and we travelled over terrain that would give riders the vapours back home- I will never again say a horse can’t do something after seeing what those horses were capable of! An absolutely wonderful trip.

Mary W., June 7, 2021

Fantastic! It was an amazing experience riding a lovely horse in stunning scenery. On a very cold, wet day, at lunchtime being given a mug of very hot, fresh mint tea, made from mint growing wild next to us, when I was only expecting cold water! Or, lying on a sunny "alpine" flower meadow in the sunshine with my horse grazing nearby. Excellent dinners, with mostly local, fresh ingredients, and in our friendly group company.

Rachel A., June 17, 2019

Beautiful country, Very friendly people. Horses very good, forward and responsive. Be prepared for dogs and bears! Long rides but broken up with breaks - each day you tackle very different terrain. Laszlo was very good, informative and looked after us very well.

Louise D., June 17, 2019

I really enjoyed this holiday. It was very well organised with an interesting route, the right amount of riding each day and good accommodation. The food was plentiful and the horses did their jobs brilliantly. I would sum it up as a beautiful ride through the lovely rolling countryside and hills of the Carpathians, with a variety of terrain and good opportunities for trots and canters. Horses are fab, food is plentiful, accommodation is well chosen and comfortable, and Laszlo is a fantastic guide.

Gill M., May 17, 2019

Fantastic - very good and well looked after horses. The guide was excellent, looked after us and the horses very well. Accommodation was as expected. Plenty of food. Beautiful scenery.

Elizabeth B., Sept. 5, 2017

I just wanted to say what a wonderful time I had in Romania. My horse was fantastic and I don't think they could have paired me any better, she was exactly what I was looking for. I actually miss her!

The guide, Lazlo, was excellent. I didn't get much chance to talk to him during the ride itself, but at dinner and breakfast he was informative and although he said he struggled with English it was not noticeable at all. He had some great stories!

The riding was a great mixture of slow pace and fast, open fields and mountains, some tricky hills and I really enjoyed wrestling with the trees through the forest! The views - stunning. The days were long, but you couldn't tire of the views and having the half day on Wednesday and a chance to go for a walk was a great little break (allowing the muscles to do something else!).

The accommodation was also varied and comfortable. The food was delicious and there was lots of it. Water was a little harder to come by especially as it was so hot but was given when we asked for it.

Laura K., Sept. 5, 2017

Loved it! The scenery, the horses, the people, it was just brilliant! Food was lovely and always plenty to go around. Showers now always hot though. The horses were lovely and well matched to the rider. Lazlo (guide) was also very kind to them and was lovely to watch him with them. Tack was ok. Bridles were a bit old, stitching looked ok, but leather looked dry. Saddles were better and saddle bags were very handy. (Our guide was...) Awesome! Very friendly and happy to answer questions about the horses and where we were. Also brilliant with the horses. (Favourite memory?) The views from the top of the mountains at 1700m (a.s.l) on day two. Also seeing the livestock and farmers up on the mountain.

Itinerary & Pricing

Day 1

Riding: No riding.

Arrive at your guesthouse in Gheorgheni where you will have dinner and overnight. Your guide will be on hand to discuss the week ahead.

Day 2

Riding: 5 - 6 hours

After being allocated a horse and undergoing a short riding assessment to make sure everyone is happy, you set off at speed across the open hay fields surrounding Gheorgheni - a surefire way of making sure everyone is awake!! After returning to a walk you ride up a really steep path to Pricske peak (1,545m) where you stop for lunch. Follow a grassy ridge to the narrow valley of the Bekeny Stream and spend your first night at a small guesthouse in the valley.

Riding: 23km

Day 3

Riding: 6 - 7 hours

After breakfast, set off riding along the banks of the stream for about an hour and then start climbing up a mountain pass to Medias peak (1,445m). From here the trail follows a ridge of the Hasmas mountains, passing a sheepfold and going through the lush green Poiana Alba (White Glade). Pass under the highest peak of the Hasmas mountains (1,792m) and head to the rock towers of Lonely Stone. The view is worth the effort as you can see two basins (Gheorgheni and Ciuc) from here. In the east are Moldova's hills, whilst to the north you can see Ceahlau's enormous limestone rocks. Stop for a picnic at the hut below Lonely Stone and then descend on a steep path to Haromkut. You spend the night in a family home in the Ciangau village.

Riding: 25km

Day 4

Riding: 3 - 4 hours

Set off riding through the valley of the Little Bicaz stream until reaching Red Lake. Ride around the lake and after leaving your horses in their shelter, walk on foot across the dramatic Bicaz Gorges. If you have the desire and energy then you can climb up the Little Suhard Massif to watch the sunset. Spend the night in comfortable bungalows beside the lake.

Riding: 17km

Day 5

Riding: 5 - 6 hours

Leave Red Lake behind and ride along an old railway line until reaching Pongracz peak, which is the highest point between Gheorgheni and Red Lake. If you are lucky then you may be able to try some "zsendice" here which is a by-product of cheese which can only be found in the shepherds shelter. Continue on the old railway line and descend into the valley of Belchiei and overnight in the same guesthouse as you spent at the start of the trail.

Riding: 25km

Day 6

Riding: 5 - 6 hours

From Bekeny valley you ride along the Sipos ridge to the unique Sugo caves. Here you have a picnic and join a guided caving adventure before riding back to Gheorgheni where your adventure started.
