Description

"We love working with quality, whether it's food or horses" is the perfect quote to summarise the rides offered by Jesper and Rikke on the wild and beautiful Danish coast. They invite you to visit their country home, just a few minutes walk from the beach of Thorup Strand, where they offer a mini 'gourmet getaway' on their prized Icelandic Horses - these horses are well-bred and well-schooled in order to give you a fantastic ride.

This location by the North Sea is ideal for sourcing delicious local ingredients of high quality including fresh fish, seafood and mushrooms, which can be found growing along the trails. Jesper and Rikke spend a few months of each year in Alsace, France, where they taste and select wines to serve with the meals they prepare for you - they also offer riding tours through the vineyards of Alsace which can be found on our website.

Food & Accommodation

Food

This is a gourmet ride and aimed specifically at 'foodies' who love to eat well and sample good quality, locally-sourced food. The meals are home-cooked by Rikke or Jesper and consequently this ride is aimed at guests who don't have overly limited diets - vegetarians however are catered for well, including many 'fine dining' courses and great local produce.

The ride is situated by the coast and fish and seafood play a part in the menu with that in mind (not for veggies of course). You can expect to be well-fed and to enjoy great drinks with your meals, including wines sourced from Alsace where Jesper and Rikke stay several months of the year.

Accommodation

Accommodation is in Rikke and Jesper's country house which has three guest rooms sharing two bathrooms. Two bedrooms have twin beds and one bedroom has a double bed.

The farmhouse is very comfortable, tastefully furnished and welcoming with sitting areas, a dining room and a wine cellar (of course!). Much of the furniture has been imported from France. The house is just a few minutes from the wild beaches of Thorup Strand.

It's important to note that guests need to share rooms and bathrooms during this tour.

Itineraries

Gourmet Getaway Standard accommodation.

Other Activities

Two non-riders can be accommodated on new 'Moondraker' e-bikes.

Travel

Transfers are available from and to Aalborg airport for an additional cost and the drive takes approximately 45 minutes. Alternatively you can hire a car and do some exploring of this beautiful and lesser-known region.

Testimonials

Malin T., Sept. 12, 2024

It was a fantastic trip with that little extra of everything. Jesper and Rikke delivered on a topnotch standard! Great horses, great food and drinks.

Elizabeth H., Aug. 30, 2024

It was a wonderful experience with lovely feisty, friendly Icelandic horses, divine food and attentive and entertaining hosts. Favourite memory? Tolting along the beach for ages.

Fiona T., Aug. 29, 2024

Fantastic. Great rides, great hosts, great accommodation and great good. Favourite memory? Long fast tolts through the forest were fun, this was my first experience of Icelandic horses and I wasn't disappointed. Also got a good gallop on long stretch of beach. The food was also 10/10. I would recommend them for a Michelin star! Fine dining at its finest and there was more than enough and spare. I was blown away by the food standard and that this was done in-house by the hosts.

Itinerary & Pricing

Day 1 - Arrival and Intro Ride

Riding: 2 hours

You are welcome to arrive in the afternoon in time for a light dinner and an introduction to Jesper and Rikke's wonderful Icelandic horses. This evening there is time for your first ride as the sun sets - you will ride for around two hours in the surrounding countryside. This area is one of Denmark's last wildernesses and the best way to explore it is on the back of a horse. Enjoy a drink before heading to bed.

Day 2 - Full Day Ride and Gourmet Dinner

Riding: 4 - 5 hours

Your full day here by Thorup Strand begins with a luxurious buffet breakfast - fresh croissants, quality cheeses, eggs and more will fuel you for a day in the saddle.

You'll collect your horse from the field, groom and tack up before heading off for the adventure. The ride today begins in the moorlands, forests and dunes before heading down towards the beach. After a ride of a few hours you will reach your lunch stop where a table is waiting for you and you can dine in comfort with the horses resting nearby. Soon it's time to mount up again and continue your ride through this spectacular landscape - the sandy footing allows for long tölts and these horses are always ready to go forwards.

On arrival back at the farm you have time to take a shower before your gourmet dinner, the culinary highlight of this tour. Your hosts will serve you several courses of home-cooked, quality cuisine alongside fine wines from Alsace which have been stored in their cellar.

Day 3 - Beach Ride and Departure

Riding: 2 hours

Today you have breakfast before tacking up one last time - it's time to hit the beach! This stretch of coastline, also known as Jammer Bay, offers an incredible length of sandy beach which is a dream for riders. This is the best way to finish your mini riding holiday in Denmark! The ride lasts from around 10:00 - 12:00 today. Back at the farm you are welcome to take a shower and have a light lunch (at approximately 12:30) before returning to the airport.

Experience Intermediate / Experienced

This trip is suitable for intermediate riders and above who are already confident and in control cantering in open spaces. Previous experience of Icelandic horses is not required as your hosts can teach you how to tölt, but those who already know and ride Icelandics will appreciate the quality of these horses.
