Description

As the birthplace of horseback safaris, Kenya offers some of the most outstanding riding on the continent, and Sosian Lodge has proudly spent the last 20 years cementing its reputation as one of the country's premier riding destinations. Guests enjoy exclusive access to over 24,000 acres of pure, untamed Laikipia wilderness. Traversing this vast, game-filled expanse with the breathtaking silhouette of Mount Kenya as your backdrop is a deeply personal adventure, offered entirely privately to only those staying at the lodge.

The riding experience at Sosian is remarkably diverse, taking you across vast, open plains teeming with zebra, oryx, giraffe, eland, and gazelle. As you descend into the thicker valleys, the landscape reveals more elusive wildlife, including kudu, buffalo, and elephant. The adventure continues along a 15-kilometre stretch of river, which not only provides superb birdwatching opportunities but also hosts large numbers of hippos, more elephants cooling off in the water, and the area's resident, remarkably visible leopards. Next year there will also be rhino!

Horses & Riding

Tack

The horses are ridden in English tack but there are a couple of Australian stock saddles.

Horses

Housed in a beautifully built stable yard, Sosian is home to around thirty-five exceptionally well-schooled and good-natured horses, ranging from gentle 12hh children’s ponies to responsive 16hh mounts. Bred to suit everyone from complete novices to advanced riders, the herd features a unique blend of Thoroughbred and tough, native Ethiopian pony crosses, known for being light in the mouth and highly responsive.

While they are safely stabled at night to protect them from lions, the horses spend their days living naturally as a herd, resulting in happy, relaxed, and incredibly willing partners for your safari adventure.

Food & Accommodation

Food

At Sosian, passion for food is at the heart of the guest experience. Over the years, the lodge has nurtured an extensive vegetable garden, making it largely self-sufficient in fresh, organic produce and salad crops. To complement the harvest, high-quality, farm-fresh beef and chicken are sourced directly from local neighbours. With these exceptional ingredients, the head chef effortlessly crafts wholesome, home-cooked meals tailored to your stay. Any dietary requirements can be easily accommodated, ideally with advance notice.

Accommodation

Today the original ranch house is now the centre piece of Sosian Lodge, made up of a large sitting room, dining room, bar and billiards room, with an expansive wrap around veranda, offering undisturbed views of the bush beyond. The bedrooms (eight in total) are spaced out across the lodge gardens.

There is a beautiful swimming pool and pool house which provides welcome refreshment at the end of the day. There is also a tennis court for those energetic guests.

Nestled apart from the rest, The Italian Cottage—handcrafted by post-war Italian artisans—offers the ultimate in comfort and privacy with its own secluded garden, a king-size bedroom, and an airy en suite bathroom.

For those travelling with children, the Family Cottage provides perfect peace of mind with its interconnected double and triple en suite rooms, ensuring everyone stays close yet comfortable.

Completing our accommodations are the Garden Cottages, featuring four versatile double and twin-room pairings. Whichever lodge you choose, you will enjoy the seamless luxury of private verandas for your morning coffee, full en suite amenities, and reliable 24-hour power.

Itinerary & Pricing

Day 1

Riding: 1 - 2 hours

Your Sosian adventure begins in time for a relaxed lunch by the pool, where your hosts will give you a brief tour of the lodge and your room, introducing you to our friendly team. Afterward, the afternoon is yours to shape—whether you want to head straight to the stables to meet the horses or simply unwind by the poolside.

Following afternoon tea, guests typically set out around 5:00 PM for a couple of hours of exploring, whether by game drive, guided bush walk, or horseback. Even if your group chooses different activities, everyone can rendezvous at the same scenic spot for a classic bush sundowner. You will drive back together just after dark, offering a prime opportunity to spot nocturnal species such as leopards, small wild cats, hyenas, and hippos out grazing. After returning to freshen up, you'll gather at the main lodge for drinks and canapés before dinner. For families, we are delighted to arrange an early children's dinner and a listening service outside the rooms so parents can dine with total peace of mind.

Day 2

Riding: 4 - 5 hours

This morning invites a slower pace, beginning with a light breakfast followed by a leisurely few hours to relax at the lodge—whether you choose to practice yoga, play a game of tennis, swim, or simply unwind with a good book. After an early lunch, riders will head to the stables and set off in a northerly direction for an exhilarating four-hour ride across the bush and savanna toward our overnight fly camp. The terrain on this part of the conservancy opens up into vast plains, allowing for a faster pace alongside herds of zebra, eland, gazelle, and giraffe.

Non-riders will head out in the same direction via game drive vehicles, with everyone converging at the camp just in time for sundowners around a roaring campfire. As the horses are settled onto a picket line for the evening, guests will enjoy a spectacular bush dinner laid out under a canopy of stars before falling asleep to the unforgettable sounds of the African night.

Day 3

Riding: 2 - 3 hours

Your morning begins gently with fresh tea or coffee delivered straight to your room for an early wake-up call, just before you head to the stables for a 7:30 AM ride. Alongside your expert guides, you will spend two to three hours exploring the diverse landscapes on horseback, frequently encountering elephant, giraffe, zebra, hippo, antelope, and buffalo..

To crown the morning, you can choose to finish your ride down by the river for a spectacular bush breakfast. While the horses are led home, you can take a gentle walk upstream with the guides to view the beautiful Sosian waterfalls—with a leap off the top for the truly brave! After an action-packed morning, you will head back to the lodge to unwind before lunch.

In the afternoon, the choice is yours: saddle up for another ride, or cover greater distances on a game drive in search of lion or the rare wild dogs endemic to the area. Sundowners in the bush will quickly become your favourite afternoon ritual, with countless stunning vistas to choose from across the property, before you return to the lodge for a relaxed dinner.

Day 4

Riding: 3 - 4 hours

Day 5

Riding: 2 - 3 hours

Following your morning tea or coffee wake-up call, you can head back to the stables or step out on foot with our expert walking guides to experience the bush from a completely different perspective. Tracking wildlife and learning about the local flora and fauna is a fascinating experience for all ages.

The group will gather back at the lodge for breakfast, after which the adventurous can jump into a game drive vehicle and head downstream with kayaks for some late-morning fun on the river. Upon returning, you can cool off in the swimming pool before sitting down to a light, healthy lunch featuring fresh produce from our organic kitchen garden.

At teatime, younger children can enjoy lead-rein rides on ponies brought right to the lodge gardens, while novice riders can take lessons in the arena. Experienced riders can head out once again for a few hours exploring Sosian’s scenic rivers and dramatic escarpments from horseback. As the day winds down, everyone returns to the lodge for another evening of sundowners, canapés, and dinner.

Day 6

Riding: 2 - 3 hours

Wake up with the sunrise to a hot cup of tea or coffee before saddling up once more to head back toward the main lodge. Cutting down through scenic valleys that harbour elephant and buffalo, you will stop to water the horses at Acacia Dam, where a stunning treehouse and a full bush breakfast await you. While the horses graze contentedly nearby, your English breakfast will be cooked over an open fire.

As the day begins to warm up, you will ride the final stretch back to the lodge for a well-earned cool-off in the pool. After enjoying another fresh and delicious lunch poolside, the afternoon is yours to relax and unwind. Later this evening, climb aboard the game drive vehicles and head down to the river with fishing rods and sundowners in hand to see if you can catch your supper, before returning to the lodge for dinner.

Day 7

Riding: No riding.

Keen riders can saddle up once again for the morning, or perhaps opt to try their hand at riding a camel. These amazing animals provide a wonderful, elevated perspective of the bush, and our camel treks offer a gentle walk led by experienced herders—meaning absolutely no prior experience is required.

Following a full breakfast back at the lodge, you can head out with Sosian’s cattle ranching manager to learn about the fascinating intricacies of farming alongside wildlife in this diverse, fauna-rich ecosystem. Our nomadic neighbours from the Samburu and Pokot tribes are also traditional cattlemen, and we work closely with them to ensure a harmonious relationship between people, livestock, and wildlife. To make this final full day a deeply cultural one, you can also choose to visit a local village or school. This offers a firsthand look at the community projects Sosian supports, from funding schools and clinics to promoting family planning and empowering local women into positions of employment.

Day 8

Riding: 2 - 3 hours

Today is your last day and after an early ride or game drive you will head back to the lodge for a full breakfast laid out in the lodge gardens. Sadly you will then say goodbye and head back home.

Accommodation

Experience Beginner / Intermediate / Experienced

All levels of riding can be catered for but if riding out in the bush riders need to be confident at walk, trot and canter over some rough terrain. Beginners and novices can have lessons in the sand arena and enjoy some garden rides. Here you can choose how many hours riding a day you wish to do so those, not so fit, can enjoy fewer hours in the saddle.
