Description
Moolmanshoek Private Reserve is a hidden gem cradled beneath the mighty Witteberg Mountains in South Africa's Free State. This Natural Heritage Site boasts miles of verdant pastureland and dramatic mountains. Its waterfalls cascade into natural plunge pools, attracting an impressive amount of game, including eland, black wildebeest, springbok, ostrich, zebra, warthog, porcupine, jackal, caracal and serval. Originally used for crop farming, the land undertook a dramatic ecological and conservational shift when it was taken over by Willie Nel in 1980. He decided to convert the land into a private game reserve and wetland habitat. This transition involved a comprehensive restoration effort. Willie recognised the importance of preserving a natural ecosystem, which had been disrupted by years of farming activities.
Today, a wide variety of wild animals roam the plains and mountain slopes of the reserve and riders will delight in viewing these herds at close range from horseback. Whether you are an experienced rider or a complete novice just venturing forth into the exciting world of travel on horseback, Moolmanshoek has horses to suit all tastes and levels. Experienced riders will revel in the freedom of long canters across the open plains, while novices can enjoy a more sedate pace, enjoying the abundance of game and the spectacular scenery, with groups of similar abilities riding together.
Moolmanshoek is also home to two successful stud farms breeding the hardy Boeperd and the resilient Arabian, with the youngsters growing up on these rugged hillsides. All Moolmanshoek's horses have uncanny sure-footedness as a result of living in this untamed and precipitous environment, providing riders with a safe and unforgettable ride.
Moolmanshoek are also affiliated with the Endurance Ride Association of South Africa (ERASA) and host 2 endurance rides annually with distances varying from 40 to 80km, making it one of the most scenic rides in the Free State.
