Algarve Coast and Tuition, Portugal

• Tailor Made Programme

Lovely horses, excellent tuition tailored to assessment, friendly staff and hosts, fantastic weather with good accommodation and food. Overall it was educational, relaxing, inspirational, challenging, friendly, inclusive and helpful. My favourite memory was riding their beautifully schooled Lusitano stallion at the end of the week, he taught me a lot. I also enjoyed the hack out on the dunes within sight of the sea and galloping along sandy tracks, very relaxing!

I thought that Bev was a great instructor and I really felt a huge improvement over the week. She filmed me most lessons and it was good to see that my overall seat and position was so much better towards the end of the week. I concentrated on lessons but it was good to see the beach and surrounding countryside when we did hack out. The food was also amazing. Overall, I would rate Almancil very highly and think it was the perfect first riding holiday!

Belle B.
We had an amazing time - thank you! I certainly learnt a lot and am now planning our next horsey holiday. I particularly liked the fact that we did a couple of ride outs but the majority of the time, we spent improving our technique and working on the things that we weren't comfortable with. If it had been just riding out, I don't think I would have come away with so much more confidence and undertanding. The accommodation was fairly basic but we couldn't have been made more welcome by Bev, Marcella et al.

My holiday was a thoroughly enjoyable and unique experience for me. An all round success both personally and in every other way. My favourite memory was the opportunity to have a lesson on Bombito, the Lusitano stallion, who was such a gentleman. There was variety and I never had a dull moment.

Jenny J.
Fabulous. A really good mix of tuition in the school and rides out and relaxation. Even if the weather had not been perfect, which it was, the itinerary was varied each day which contributed to the enjoyment. My favourite memory was taking my horse from the field, grooming and tacking up, riding and improving and then removing tack, cleaning, grooming and giving my horse his tea back in the field. I'd done bits before but not the whole.

Sue J.
Fabulous people, scenery and fantastic horses. Learnt so much and really gained in confidence. The Portuguese sunsets were inspiring!

Penny D.
Fantastic! Excellent hospitality (and food), training for classical riding was first class... Very good at teaching the classical posture, which to me is the foundation of good riding. Stable management training was also very good and every horse was treated as an individual.

Lucy A.
Excellent! Made to feel very welcome in Bev's home. Achieved what I set out to do and more. Cannot fault. (Favourite memory?) Being a stones throw from the horses - fabulous hospitality and riding two beautiful Lusitano horses.

Beverley was an outstanding teacher and I learnt so much. The staff really made us welcome. We also had plenty of time to relax and get to know the area. Everyone worked really hard for us. (Favourite memory?) Riding the lusitano stallion to opera music and learning to do a turn on the forehand.

Rebecca B.
It was a lovely hospitable atmosphere. Bev and the family were welcoming and friendly, and I learned a great deal during my lessons with beautiful hacks as well.

Beth R.
Good combination of lessons and riding out with lots of time for relaxation in the sun! Bev, Christina and the team looked after me very well, taking me to the beautiful beach and also to the local market. It definitely helped improve my riding and my confidence which was my main aim for the holiday, as well as getting some sun! (Favourite memory?) Difficult to pick a favourite! I enjoyed the lessons more than I thought I would. I lunged a horse for the first time and learnt about grooming and care of the horses as well as having riding lessons. The local beach was beautiful and a lovely place to relax and read, as was the terrace at the villa. The rides out were great too. I rode four different horses and was happy with all of them. I had a couple of lessons and a ride out on Suan, the Lusitano gelding, the first time I've ridden a horse with that level of training. Difficult to say if he was my favourite or the lovely Pushkin! All the horses were well cared for and I felt safe with all the horses that I rode, both in lessons and on the rides out. The tack was absolutely fine and in good condition.

Tracy G.
Very enjoyable. We were made to feel very at home and were thoroughly looked after by Bev and her team. Friendly people, horses were well looked after and very safe.

Sarah D.
Good mix of lessons and riding out. Well cared for, happy horses. Nice relaxed atmosphere in the house. Learnt a lot from Bev. Enjoyed grooming and tacking up. (Horses?) Willing, happy horses Well cared for. Equipment fine. (Favourite memory?) Riding out in the woods and knowing I had improved my riding skills.

Travel Advice

Please ensure you read the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) advice before you travel.

Ride Description

This equestrian centre, one of the Algarve's most well-known and prestigious, is situated in an upmarket holiday area. It is an ideal location for enjoyable riding with an abundance of sandy tracks, the open land full of wildflowers and herbs as well close to golden beaches and a nature reserve. It lies in a region where riding is possible throughout the year as, even in winter, the sun is virtually always shining. Warm evenings provide the opportunity for enjoying a wonderful sunset from horseback and the unique experience of riding under a full moon.

This well established British run riding school is approved by both the ABRS and the Portuguese Equestrian Federation and, as such, provides quality tuition by a team of professionals eager to help you develop your riding skills and horse knowledge – whether you are a beginner or an experienced rider. The centre was started in 1985 by Bev who has lived in the Portugal since 1972. She trained at the famous Talland School of Equitation and under Portuguese Classical masters. Among her qualifications she has a BHS Intermediate Teaching Certificate, ABRS Teaching Certificate, Riding for the Disabled Group Instructor, BHS Centre Manager in Equestrian Tourism, as well as holding a first aid training certificate.

Lessons are generally taken with Beverley for more advanced instruction or Margarita who specialises in teaching beginners and children. Margarita also assists Beverley with the children's Pony Club lesson each week and is a wonderfully client orientated person. Beverley is able to teach fluently in English, Portuguese, French, Spanish, German and can work with many other languages too as Margarita also speaks Romanian, Russian, English, Spanish and Portuguese.

Trails are either led by Beverley or her right-hand man, Christian. Christian holds his BHS Ride Leader qualification as well as being a first aider. He is a fun and personable riding companion who is always able to draw people out of their shell. He speaks both English and Portuguese fluently.

It is unusual to find such well-qualified teachers and ride leaders in a holiday environment but Beverley believes that a holiday can provide the perfect opportunity to really develop your riding. The centre ensures that riders and horses are well matched to ensure guests get the most out of their stay - you are encouraged to get involved with horse care too and to improve in all aspects of your dealing with horses.

The riding centre is primarily visited by local guests coming to ride and holiday guests are few in number but always given a warm welcome. We recommend this holiday particularly for single travellers (no single supplement) or pairs of friends looking for good hands-on experience with the horses. It is also an excellent choice for families with children as Beverley is heavily involved with the local Pony Club and has several trustworthy ponies.

Natalie from Far and Ride has visited this destination and would love to answer any questions you might have about it. She thought it was fantastic and experienced a really warm welcome from Bev and her dedicated team.

NB. During the summer months, it's not possible to ride near the sea, as the beaches here have blue flag status and are therefore protected. However, you will still be able to enjoy a canter or gallop along the many sandy tracks found in the beach area.

Food & Accommodation

Everyone experiences a friendly welcome, from both staff and dogs, at the villa which has been the host's family home since 1972. It is a typically Portuguese home set in lovely grounds and with a large terrace overlooking the garden where you are able to enjoy your meals.

The accommodation is based in Bev's family home and consists of three comfortable en-suite bedrooms. The spacious Almond Suite overlooking the garden has a large double bed (and space for an extra bed) and an en-suite bathroom with a bathtub. The Orange Tree Room is a large twin bedroom with its own shower room. The Iris Room is a cosy single with an en suite shower room. This room is particularly beautiful and cool during those hot summer months.

The common areas include a wonderful sunny terrace, family kitchen and a cosy living/dining room with a log fire; perfect for cooler winter evenings. Free wifi is available in every room.

Alternatively, you may wish to have a look at any of the wonderful local villas, apartments or boutique hotels which are all within easy access of the riding centre. Do not hesitate to ask us about the options available to you when you enquire!

The food here is home cooked and always delicious. Breakfast first thing will be light - maybe just a cup of coffee, some juice and a small snack. Later on you can enjoy a delicious 'brunch' after you have worked up an appetite. Meals are very often enjoyed on the sun-drenched terrace. Specific diets are certainly catered for.

Dinner is either taken at the villa or at one of the local restaurants allowing guests to experience true Portuguese culture and local dishes, as well as a selection of the areas fine Portuguese wines.

When not in the saddle, guests are able to use the facilities at the Four Seasons Country Club just down the road. Here there is a large outdoor swimming pool, an indoor pool, jacuzzi, gym, squash courts, snooker room, sauna and library as well as a bar and excellent restaurant. Massages and beauty treatments can also be arranged.

For active non riders, this area of the Algarve is home to some of the world’s finest golf courses. The Centre can supply you with details of the golf facilities and help you arrange to play. Tennis lessons can also be arranged at an academy in Quinta do Lago whether you want private lessons or to join a special clinic.

For those wishing for a more relaxed holiday, why not visit one of the many wonderful shopping centres or a more traditional local market. Alternatively, many gorgeous beaches and nature reserves are only a short distance from the centre. Maps, direction and ideas can be provided for you.

For children, there are numerous activities in the area including a visit to the marine park to watch the dolphins and, of course, just a few minutes drive away there are the wonderful sandy beaches stretching across the Algarve. The beach is known for its blue flag status which indicates high standards of safety and cleanliness.

NEW: The nearby Magnolia hotel (within walking distance of the riding centre) has a gym and spa which guests are able to use. Use of the gym facilities is at an additional cost of 10€ (EUR) per person, per day (paid direct). Spa treatments can also be booked at additional cost.

Tailor Made Programme

Nestled among the pinewoods, cork and eucalyptus trees, this destination is perfect for riders of all abilities wanting to enjoy the warmth and the beauty of the Algarve from horseback.

The Centre offers both 10 and 15 hour riding packages tailor made to suit the needs and ability of each individual rider. These programmes provide both the complete beginner and experienced rider with the perfect setting for developing skills through tuition, stable management and trails. Special programmes are also offered to children, making the centre ideal for both families as well as single travellers. Furthermore, it offers specialist tuition for disabled riders.

Lessons are offered daily in the outdoor arena (60 x 40m) where the more experienced rider can improve on existing skills on the flat and over fences. With instructors who specialise in teaching with care and patience, riding skills are easily developed and confidence gained through experienced and sympathetic hands.

What’s more, with the emphasis on safety and fun, parents can be assured that their children enjoy their experience while receiving expert tuition designed to suit each individual rider.

In addition to the high standard of tuition, one, two and three hour trails are also offered. A combination of scenic forest paths and varied terrain allow for gentle ambles in the sun or challenging trails for the more experienced rider.  A wonderful ride, along the trails of the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve, gives riders the opportunity to see many areas of the Algarve, from horseback, which they may otherwise miss. There may be a chance to stop for a luxury picnic lunch - which friends and family can join - under the shade of pine trees, with views over the golden sands, to the sea. Alternatively, there are enjoyable rides through the orange groves of the Ludo Valley with great sandy canter tracks and wonderful wildflowers and herbs, particularly in the Spring.

Less experienced riders can also take pleasure in shorter, challenging rides exploring the beautiful surrounding areas with experienced guides and instructors. In this way, you will continue to build on the skills learnt in the arena. Brimming with flora and fauna, the area will also prove of interest to those with a passion for nature. Many of the trails wind through the pine woods and fig groves, with almond and cork trees as well as. In the early months of the year, the wildflowers and herbs en route provide a heady and delightful perfume.

In summer, riders can enjoy the unique experience of riding by the tidal lagoon, perhaps stopping for a sunset picnic and riding back under the moon and stars.

For riders wanting to monitor their progress, the centre does offer the opportunity to train for and take ABRS Weekly Rider Tests covering all standards on request. During your stay, your instructor will be able to chart your progress and give you some wonderful and constructive tips to take home. This riding centre offers the very best tuition and guidance and riders of all levels will benefit, leaving with their confidence and skills improved.
